The current volume is the third edition of this classic monograph, which is devoted exclusively to the often ignored, often misunderstood, complex patellofemoral joint. The previous edition appeared in 1990. The current edition is timely and maintains the format and presentation of its predecessors. The new chapters are welcome additions and include those on history-taking and physical examination, arthroscopy, and non-operative treatment. The text is extremely readable and concise, but perhaps its greatest strength is that each chapter can stand alone.
The text provides excellent discussions of anatomy, biomechanics, physical examination, and imaging techniques. The chapter on history-taking and physical examination is particularly well written and is essential reading for residents. The references at the end of each chapter are plentiful and current. Fulkerson's concepts of patellar tilt and lateral compression syndrome also are presented. Although these discussions are somewhat biased, they are clearly written and thought-provoking.
The chapter on non-operative treatment is a good overview of physical therapy modalities and the rationale for their use; however, it should be expanded in future editions. The chapter on operative treatment includes a careful, well illustrated description of the author's technique for anteromedial and distal transfer of the tibial tubercle. This step-by-step discussion alone will make the text a valuable addition to the library of any knee surgeon. The chapter on reflex sympathetic dystrophy is somewhat dated and cursory, but this is only a minor criticism.
Overall, this is an excellent text for residents and practitioners who treat problems involving the knee. The book's size and affordable price make it readily accessible.
