Rockwood and Wilkins' sixth edition of Fractures in Children
provides important information both for the student and the experienced
clinician. The format of each chapter is standardized to present information
in a logically organized and readable fashion. Illustrations have been
enhanced in this newest edition of the book through the addition of images
from advanced imaging studies and by the artful shading of simple line
drawings to facilitate interpretation.
The editors have orchestrated a comprehensive update of each chapter with
expanded references and the addition of several new contributing authors who
have been selected for their expertise and contributions to recent orthopaedic
literature.
Chapter 5, on physeal injury, has been skillfully developed to include a
discussion of physeal anatomy, growth, and injury classification. The
accompanying illustrations of imaging studies are excellent in quality, and
the suggested strategy for surgical intervention in patients with physeal
bridges is comprehensive and authoritative.
Chapter 24, on intra-articular injuries of the knee, clearly presents core
information with regard to osseous and soft-tissue injuries of the knee,
evaluative techniques, and recommended interventions. The author's
organization of the material and the inclusion of newer references, pearls and
pitfalls, and clearly visualized arthroscopic illustrations provide the basis
for a thoughtful and uncomplicated presentation of controversial issues that
will contribute to sound clinical decisions by those who care for physically
immature athletes.
Chapter 27, on fractures and dislocations of the foot, is further developed
to clarify diagnosis and treatment of fractures of the fifth metatarsal, the
talar neck, and the calcaneus. The chapter is well organized and beautifully
illustrated.
The editors, reflecting the principles instilled in them by their personal
mentors, have continued the tradition of excellence established by their
predecessors. Their efforts have succeeded in creating a valuable clinical
resource that will continue to disseminate the wisdom of past masters in
conjunction with the advances of new leaders in the treatment of pediatric
injury.
