Question: In patients having total hip replacement (THR) or total knee replacement (TKR), is wound closure with 2-octylcyanoacrylate (OCA) superior to skin staples or subcuticular sutures?Design: Randomized (unclear allocation concealment), blinded (patients and outcome assessors), controlled trial with 8 to 12-week follow-up.Setting: An orthopaedic institute and hospital in Perth, Western Australia, Australia.Patients: 102 patients having THR (median age range, 69 to 71 y; 51% women) and 85 patients having TKR (median age range, 66 to 73 y; 56% women). Exclusion criteria were planned revision, previous incision in the operative area, history of keloid formation, allergy to superglue (SuperGlue, Rancho Cucamonga, California), regular anticoagulation therapy, or underlying malignancy. Follow-up was 100%.
