The publication of this second edition of The Adult Hip is timely,
as the management of hip disease continues to evolve rapidly. Dr. Callaghan,
Dr. Rosenberg, and Dr. Rubash have effectively updated the 1998 first edition,
and the resulting two-volume textbook is an exceptional accomplishment.
Dr. Morrey's excellent review (JBJS Am., September 1998) of the
first edition of this book captures the important aspects of this new edition.
"The challenge of synthesizing material from such a large number of
contributors [over 200 then and now]... is a major one and, overall, this
challenge has been well addressed.... The goal of providing a new standard
text on total hip replacement has been not just attained but
surpassed."
With the exception of a few chapters from the first edition, most of the
chapters have been extensively rewritten and updated. The changes have greatly
improved an otherwise excellent text. Similar to those seen in the first
edition, the illustrations are plentiful and of superb quality and educational
value. The updated edition contains eleven more chapters, including a chapter
each on kinematics, bone graft substitutes, nonoperative management options,
and hip resurfacing, and four chapters on minimally invasive surgery.
The editors have maintained the philosophy of allowing the authors latitude
in the scope of their assigned chapters, which has resulted in some overlap of
topics. For the most part, this overlap results in an extremely comprehensive
textbook. In rare instances, however, this freedom has resulted in omission of
material rather than overlap. Further discussion of any weaknesses of the book
would be pointless, as deficiencies are minor and infrequent.
The first edition of this textbook was a valuable resource to which this
reviewer personally referred on multiple occasions. The updates in the second
edition are excellent and will ensure that this book will remain the
authoritative textbook on the hip. The quality of this edition makes this book
an essential acquisition for all medical libraries, training programs, and
specialists in hip surgery.
