While HIV-positive patients continue to live longer with antiretroviral medications, adverse effects of long-term treatment include dyslipidemia, diabetes mellitus, and abnormalities of bone metabolism3,4. Metabolic bone disorders are common in patients with HIV infection, and many patients have premature osteoporosis and an increased risk of fracture5,6. While the mechanism of skeletal fragility in these patients remains inconclusive, antiretroviral medications have been described as a factor contributing to bone loss3,7.
