T1 The Pirogoff Amputation for Necrosis of the ForefootA Case Report JF The Journal of Bone & Joint Surgery JO The Journal of Bone & Joint Surgery YR 2010 FD April 1 VO 92 IS 4 SP 968 OP 972 DO 10.2106/JBJS.H.01890 UL http://dx.doi.org/10.2106/JBJS.H.01890 AB The Pirogoff amputation, removal of the forefoot and talus followed by calcaneotibial arthrodesis, produces a lower extremity with a minimum loss of length that is capable of bearing full weight1-5. Although the technique itself is not new, patients who have already undergone amputation of the contralateral leg may benefit particularly from this little-used amputation. Painless weight-bearing is essential for the patient who needs to retain the ability to make indoor transfers independently of helpers or a prosthesis. As the number of patients with peripheral vascular disease continues to increase, this amputation should be in the armamentarium of the treating orthopaedic surgeon.
