AU - Bartlett, Craig AU - Najibi, Soheil Y1 - 2009/04/01 N1 - JO - The Journal of Bone & Joint Surgery SP - 980 EP - 997 VL - 91 IS - 4 N2 - The care of patients with gunshot wounds can be clinically challenging as a result of the injury severity and systems-based factors, yet relatively few reports concerning the care of these patients have been written. To place the magnitude of the problem in perspective, it should be noted that there are 60,000 to 80,000 nonfatal gunshot wounds annually in the United States1. In comparison, in the sixty-six months from March 19, 2003, through October 4, 2008, only 30,072 individuals sustained battlefield wounds during Operation Iraqi Freedom2. Clearly, gunshot wounds are an enormous problem and orthopaedic surgeons should be aware of these injuries and their treatment. SN - 0021-9355 M3 - doi: UR - http://dx.doi.org/ ER -
