Affected patients are usually adolescents and young adults, with 70% of patients being younger than twenty years of age at the time of diagnosis. The male:female ratio is 2:12. Patients typically present with dull, aching pain that has been persistent for weeks to months, is characteristically worse at night, and is relieved with aspirin or nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs.
