Use of androgenic anabolic steroids continues to be common in spite of widespread awareness of associated adverse effects and ethical concerns, with self-reported rates of anabolic steroid abuse as high as 15% in competitive adult athletes1. Overall, the highest rate of steroid abuse is suspected to be among recreational bodybuilders, with the primary goal of enhancing cosmetic appearance rather than improving performance2,3.
