Y1 - 2010/04/01 N1 - JO - The Journal of Bone & Joint Surgery SP - 1012 EP - 1029 VL - 92 IS - 4 N2 - The importance of the menisci in the human knee is well understood. The menisci occupy 60% of the contact area between the tibial and femoral cartilage surfaces and transmit >50% of joint compression forces. Following meniscectomy, the tibiofemoral contact area decreases by approximately 50%, while the contact forces increase two to threefold1-6. Removal of as little as 15% to 34% of a meniscus increases contact pressures by >350%7. Total lateral meniscectomy results in a 45% to 50% decrease in the total contact area and a 235% to 335% increase in the peak local contact pressure8.
