Although the technique itself is not new, patients who have already undergone amputation of the contralateral leg may benefit particularly from this little-used amputation. Painless weight-bearing is essential for the patient who needs to retain the ability to make indoor transfers independently of helpers or a prosthesis. As the number of patients with peripheral vascular disease continues to increase, this amputation should be in the armamentarium of the treating orthopaedic surgeon.
